Talking Cars 410: Driving the Rivian R1S SUV
Plus, we help an audience member choose a more fuel-efficient SUV with a hearty towing capacity to replace his Toyota Highlander
Main theme: In this episode, we give our first driving impressions of the all-electric Rivian R1S. It’s based on the same mechanicals as the R1T pickup truck we’ve already tested, except the R1S is a three-row SUV. Our discussion involves the similarities and differences with the R1T, as well as how the R1S compares with other larger EV SUVs on the market, such as the Tesla Model X.
Our panel wades into what it’s like to floor the accelerator pedal on an 835-hp, all-wheel-drive SUV—the answer is that it’s thrilling! We also analyze the R1S’ ride and handling and debate the usefulness of its interior gimmicks. And we pose the question: “Of all things that an automaker might copy from Tesla, why choose the controls?” Rivian’s uber-touchscreen-based infotainment setup, which eschews most physical controls, is a near-clone of Tesla. And, as with Tesla models, the result is driver distraction and lots of frustration behind the wheel of the R1S.
Audience Question
I want to replace my 2013 Toyota Highlander with an SUV that is more fuel-efficient yet can still tow at least 5,000 pounds, but I’m finding the search difficult. Does such a vehicle exist?
