If you’re in need of a new appliance, you shouldn’t have to pay full price to get a quality machine. Consumer Reports is tracking prices on all the appliances we test, and we’re seeing some good discounts on great models in just about every category. The best time to get a big ticket item like a new refrigerator or dishwasher will usually be around long holiday weekends, such as the upcoming Memorial Day, but if you need to replace something sooner, you can still find good savings.
To help you pinpoint the best blend of quality and affordability, we look at the results of our lab tests and member surveys, as well as the prices at major retailers, to determine when a sale really is a great deal. Refrigerators
Narrow French-door refrigerators can be difficult to find. So the LG LFC22770ST is a rare bird, offering incredible performance for its size and price. In our tests, this 30-inch model receives top-level ratings for everything except ease of use, where it still performs satisfactorily. This model comes with split shelves in addition to all the standard features.
Why it’s a good deal: This model is selling for close to $2,100 at other major retailers, making this a standout price for a trusty fridge.
The Amana ASI2175GRS is a solid refrigerator all around, garnering above-average ratings for thermostat control and temperature uniformity. This 33-inch model is a bit light on features, but it has an external water/ice dispenser, gallon-sized storage bins on the doors, and digital controls.
Why it’s a good deal: It’s a solid discount for a solid performer from our ratings.
At just 24 inches wide, the Whirlpool WRT112CZJZ is one of the narrowest top-freezer refrigerators available, but it’s one of the best models in our ratings for its size. And thanks to its nearly $600 price, it’s also a CR Best Buy. The unit earns top ratings for crucial cooling functions and for noise output, making it the quietest in the class, and scores above average for energy efficiency. Its low score for convenience is typical of top-freezers, as is its lack of features, though this Whirlpool does offer gallon storage on the doors. In surveys of our members, Whirlpool top-freezers rated very high for predicted reliability but just below average for owner satisfaction, a common combination among top-freezer brands.
Why it’s a good deal: You’re saving nearly $100 with this discount.
The 28-inch Samsung RT16A6195SR turns in a solid, above-average performance among top-freezers, notching high scores for thermostat control, temperature uniformity, and energy efficiency, while earning a middling noise rating. Features are scarce here, per the norm, but it does come with gallon storage on the door and spillproof shelves.
Why it’s a good deal: If you’re in the market for a new top-freezer fridge, this $150 discount could be the deal you’re looking for. This model is selling for upward of $750 elsewhere.
Washing Machines
The LG WT7405CW is the top-rated top-load agitator in our ratings. Its 85-minute wash cycle requires patience, and it’s kind of rough on fabrics, so you may want to consider the delicate cycle for your best threads. But it’ll clean your clothes effectively: It receives stellar ratings for water and energy efficiency and a strong score for washing performance. Check your space, because this washer’s measurements differ slightly from standard models. It stands at 44.5 inches tall, 27.5 inches wide, and 28.5 inches deep.
Why it’s a good deal: This is a nearly 25 percent discount. It’s even dropped in price $50 in the last few days.
One of the most affordable top-load agitators in our tests, the LG WT7005CW washing machine delivers across the board. The energy-efficient washer isn’t the gentlest on clothes, but it’s easier on your laundry space. It’s among the quietest models in our tests and it gets high scores for vibration, meaning it won’t disturb you or rumble on your floor. Cycle time is 70 minutes using the normal wash, heavy-soil setting. Shorten it by using the normal-soil setting when you can. (Only the LG WT7405CW rates higher in our tests, and it’s also on sale but retails for a few hundred dollars more.)
Why it’s a good deal: The price has just dropped back down to match the low price we see during major sales.
The LG WT7150CW ranks among the top HE washing machines in CR’s tests, primarily for its first-rate cleaning performance, water efficiency, and vibration. It also earns a fine rating for energy efficiency, but its gentleness on clothes is middling. It can still handle big loads within its slighter interior and exterior frame—5 cubic feet, 44.5 inches high, 29.1 inches deep, and the standard 27 inches wide. LG’s HE washing machines earned top marks for predicted reliability in CR’s latest member survey, so they’re less likely to develop problems or break within the first five years.
Why it’s a good deal: Like the model above, this LG machine has dropped $30 as well.
Clothes Dryers
Combining strong scores and an already low price, the LG DLE3400W is a great value, and LG electric dryers earned high scores for reliability and owner satisfaction in CR’s member survey. (We expect this model to perform similarly to the LG DLEX3700W.) This dryer is Energy Star certified (it uses about 20 percent less energy than conventional dryers) and includes a moisture sensor. Plus, it’s stackable and very quiet.
Why it’s a good deal: The sale price for this dryer has dropped $100 in the last few days, putting this machine back at the low price we see during major holidays.
The Energy Star certified LG DLE7300WE flawlessly and quietly dries clothes inside 7.3 cubic feet of claimed capacity. At 45 inches high, it’s a tad taller than standard dryers, so it’s not stackable. It has a moisture sensor, WiFi, and a duct-blockage indicator, meaning it will detect and remind you of a clogged vent between your quarterly or semiannual manual checks. What’s more, LG is one of the most reliable dryer brands in our ratings—and CR members are supremely satisfied with their electric models.
Why it’s a good deal: This is the only retailer with a discount on this model, which otherwise costs over $1,000.
Induction Cooktops and Ranges
The sleek slide-in LG LSE4616ST range offers a great blend of stylish looks, features, and performance at a price that’s still below that of some competing models. Performance is strong across the board, with excellent ratings for high heat, baking, broiling, and oven capacity. You’ll find two high-power heating elements, convection, and WiFi connectivity, too.
Why it’s a good deal: This range has been discontinued, but Best Buy still has it on clearance, for $300 less than the previous low price.
This 30-inch Frigidaire Gallery FGIC3066TB cooktop cooks as well as models costing three times as much, earning top marks for both low-heat and high-heat performance. As a brand, Frigidaire earned midlevel marks for reliability, according to data analyzed from our member surveys.
Why it’s a good deal: Amazon’s discount is the best we’ve ever seen for this model, which is already one of the more affordable options we’ve tested.
The Frigidaire Gallery GCRI3058AF is one of the least expensive induction ranges you’ll find. Its four elements perform every bit as well as models three times the price. They’re fast to heat yet also deftly hold a simmer, gently melting chocolate without scorching and without constant adjustments to the burner. The oven bakes and broils evenly and is quite roomy. What you won’t find on this lower-priced model are specialty baking settings (such as those used for proofing bread) and helpful features like a warming zone on the cooktop.
Why it’s a good deal: This is one of the most budget-friendly induction ranges available, and you’re saving even more on top of that by getting it on sale.
The 36-inch Frigidaire FFIC3626TB cooktop features a smooth glass surface and all-digital controls for a completely seamless, modern look. Performance is strong across the board, with excellent ratings for low and high heat. This model costs significantly less than many other 36-inch induction cooktops—even those with worse performance. As a brand, Frigidaire earned a satisfactory rating for predicted reliability of its induction cooktops.
Why it’s a good deal: This is currently half off the list price, a killer deal we’ve never seen for this model.
Dishwashers
Those looking for a budget-friendly dishwasher that offers solid performance may find it in the GE GDT226SSLSS. At under $700, it’s the most affordable dishwasher in our roundup and consistently delivers clean dishes with each wash, according to CR’s tests. Drawbacks include a less-than-stellar drying performance and a somewhat noisy operation. But with a cycle time of 125 minutes—the shortest on this list—you may be able to brush aside the inconveniences. GE receives a decent rating for predicted reliability but a less than satisfactory one for owner satisfaction.
Why it’s a good deal: With the discount, this is the most budget-friendly dishwasher CR has tested.
The Whirlpool WDTA50SAKZ dishwasher is a strong performer with a third rack and an upscale look for the price, including integrated controls. Whirlpool also earned a strong rating for predicted reliability and a middling score for owner satisfaction, based on data from our reader survey. It’s similar to lower-end models from the KitchenAid brand, which is also owned by Whirlpool.
Why it’s a good deal: This is already one of the best options under $1,000, and the more than $250 savings makes it even more appealing.
Wine Refrigerators
The Antarctic Star 36 Bottle Wine Cooler is the best freestanding wine fridge in our ratings by a healthy margin. In our lab tests, it offers very good temperature performance but only decent energy efficiency and middling noise output (meaning it’s somewhat on the noisier side compared with other tested models). This Antarctic Star fridge features temperature controls on the front of the unit, child control locks, and shelf stops, but it lacks a door lock.
Why it’s a good deal: The on-page coupon takes a big chunk off the price.
The Kalamera 30 Bottle Wine Fridge is the only undercounter wine fridge in our ratings, but its performance is on a par with the freestanding models we tested. It offers great temperature performance and moderate noise output but less than favorable energy efficiency. This Kalamera features a tinted glass door, a door lock, and shelf stops, but its temperature controls are located inside the storage cavity, meaning you have to open the door to make temperature adjustments.
Why it’s a good deal: The on-page coupon takes an impressive $100 off the price. This fridge was over $700 a few months ago, making it an even sweeter offer.
Ranges
The single-oven, gas LG Studio LSDL6336F is one of the best ranges in our tests, across all types. It performs impressively in every test. It has convection, continuous grates, a griddle burner, two high-powered burners, and even a "steam clean" mode for when you don’t need the full force of standard oven cleaning.
Why it’s a good deal: The sale price has fallen $200 since Monday, marking a new low.
The Samsung Bespoke NX60BB871112 is for the consumer who values aesthetics and doesn’t mind paying more for them. A particularly gorgeous range, this Samsung features digital oven controls with a single analog dial and backlit burner knobs. While it scores just behind the LG above overall, it’s still a strong performer, with solid ratings for baking and oven capacity, and a superb score for low-heat simmering. It also boasts an integrated griddle burner, continuous grates, convection, and WiFi connectivity.
Why it’s a good deal: You’re looking at a nearly $1,000 discount on this aesthetically pleasing gas range.
The GE Profile PSS93YPFS is the electric range to get if you don’t need a second oven. This single-oven electric smoothtop is a slide-in with all digital controls and offers stellar performance, with top-notch ratings for baking, cooking on low, and oven capacity. It has convection, an air-fry mode in the oven, and a single high-powered burner on the cooktop.
Why it’s a good deal: This is a massive discount on one of the best electric ranges.
